Rosie Goodness

I can't help but share some of the Rosies.
This is one of three places they congregate, just outside my back door.

Yes, every bird you see here, is a Rosy-Finch.
Oh, and the White-winged Dove showed up, too.

Yesterday, just as it began to snow,
I had some new yard-birds:
Meadowlarks! Isn't March 14th a little early?
There are more pictures below, who knew they'd come to a yard?

Simply wonderful. I'd love to have that many birds. How much seed do you put out in a day?

Well, for the past couple of weeks we've had a rash of 1) especially snowy weather and 2) LOTS of birds. I don't usually feed like this, except in winter and before all the Red-winged blackbirds show up!

That said, I'm embarrassed to say for 2-3 weeks I've gone through a 50# bag of Black-oil Sunflower seeds per week.

Does that mean I'm obsessive?

[sigh]

I'd love to see Rosy Finches and Meadowlarks at my feeders! I hear Meadowlarks in the distance but don't see them here. Your finches are like my flocks of House Finches and English Sparrows, not to mention Eurasian Collared Doves.

Hiya Fran,

While the Meadowlarks only visited the one day, the hundreds of Rosies continue to come daily. I feel blessed. And I love to share; for the last week or so, several folks have come to see them. All except a couple who came in the late afternoon have seen bunches! I'm tickled to say a photographer/ author came yesterday and said, looking around at several hundred Rosy-Finches on the ground at his feet or cued in the trees "Ya know, if someone didn't like birds, your yard would be a very freaky place!"

I hope he got some good shots; he delighted me with a copy of his book " "The Owl and the Woodpecker: Encounters with North America's Most Iconic Birds" " which you can see pieces of here: www.paulbannick.com

I enjoyed your blog. Rosy goodness, indeed! I would love to have a yard full of them--they would be a new bird for me! We are feeding every red-winged blackbird in the universe, I think. It can't be long before they head north.
We are already going through a lot of hummingbird nectar, also.

Thank you so much for opening your yard for us. I got some wonderful photos! I'm glad the rosies were still around, and I'm very glad I got to meet you!

Leslie,

It was great to meet you, too...what a treat. I hope we three can do some birding together sometime, I'd really like that. The Rosies finally left; first time they stayed till April! The last few people who came to see them didn't...but they did find a couple new birds for me; in my own yard. Got a yellow-shafted Flicker and a Red-breasted Nuthatch. Sweet, huh!
