Sometimes I can tell a Rufus, for the reddish-brown they exhibit and sometimes I'm pretty sure when I see a female Calliope; because they are so, so tiny. I understand their wings are often longer then their tails, but I find that hard to discern.

The reason I know when I'm looking at a Black-chinned (a female or even a male who isn't in the sun (and showing that beautiful blue necklace)) is because Black-chinned Hummingbirds are tail-dippers. They are almost constantly dipping their tails...up and down, up and down; even while they feed. Watch for that; it seems to me you should see them in Denver.Beverlyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09334121900896195207noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5598189770868382234.post-37358813835090268872010-10-21T05:02:50.033-06:002010-10-21T05:02:50.033-06:00Beautiful Hummingbird...I've never seen one.Beautiful Hummingbird...I've never seen one.Carolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16774903259772280962noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5598189770868382234.post-83128957430182206102010-10-14T11:10:33.242-06:002010-10-14T11:10:33.242-06:00Lovely, really lovely.
